All internet users use search engines and it is big helping hand to all us. Don't need even to ask which search engine you are most often use for finding information online. You will certainly reply that Google. Research shows that for 99.9% people actually use four main search engines only: 
Google, Yahoo!, Bing and Ask.

Some search engines are giving us pictures and
 music files as search results.

Don't confuse search engine with online directory. Search engines usually contain much more information than directories, because they operate automatically. SE uses special program, named as spider or crawler for automatic web surfing. They save all data into a huge database. There is no any search engine that has whole entire web information and not all results are up to date. If you search for something special it is good to use few search engines for best results to get.

Search engines always are looking for most relevant results to display for us for the keywords we type in search box. For this reason it makes sense to write full pages about subject we are trying to present or to sell. It helps not only to rank higher in search engines, but will likely we keep people on our website as they read content they searched for. 

 

You can't fool search engines as they know all the tricks people are using: keyword spamming and hidden text, cloaking and doorway pages, etc. They will remove you from their database if you are caught. And remove you permanently.

 

Google.  I guess, most of us agree that Google is unquestionable king of Search Engines. It is fastest growing search engine, having largest public information databases today. You can try to search images or maps or news on Google... About 80% Internet searches are done using Google search tool. 

Google search engine allows to add your url for free and this engine doesn't care about type of your files, it index almost everything. Google have its own algorithms, and your site will be ranked according to its standards. Ranked in part is based on the number of quality sites  you are linking to.

Yahoo. If you want your site was get listed on Yahoo, most likely you will have to pay for it. Yahoo! first appeared online in 1994. Much changed since this time and now Yahoo! are using millions of people.

Submit your site for free can only non profit organization. Otherwise, you must find the best subdirectory for your site on Yahoo and pay. You must pay if you have commercial site, or your company is created for profit. And even if you have non profit website and you submit to non commercial category, be ready to wait for many months, may even years. Still it is worth a try, because sometimes Yahoo! are listing non profit sites within few weeks.

BING or MSN Search Engine. BING just  accumulate  search results from other search engines. BING considers themselves as leading search engine, they report being the most trafficked SE. There is still big disagreement about largest traffic and which engine wins. Submit your website for free

Ask.com Search Engine. Ask was founded by G. Gruener and D. Warthen in 1996. It was launched a bit later, in April of 1997. Ask search engine keeps trying to do something different than other SE. They make people searching more simple. 

Ask.com is based on natural or human language, in other words they allow searchers to ask simple questions and get answers. You can ask what is the population of any country and get an answer, not just documents list as result. Ask.com is a bit slower at crawling new websites and new pages than other major engines.

AOL Search Engine.  AOL means America Online. This search engine is named America Online or AOL in short, and it is a group online services. Their reputation as Internet Services Providers is great. AOL Organic search has a partnership with Google, this means searching on AOL Search, we get almost the same results as from Google. Results in most cases are the same for organic and for paid searches.

Alta vista. AltaVista for many years was one of the most important three largest search engines, but last years it lost its popularity. They had two search modes: Basic Search and Advanced Search. They introduced third - Power search in August 2000. Then it was merged.

DuckDuckGo.  Yes, it has an unusual name. Founder is Gabriel Weinberg. This search engine looks similar to Google, but it gives answers on the first results page. DuckDuckGo is not collecting and not sharing personal information. They do not collect your IP and there is no ways to identify who you are or your search queries, your privacy is safe. It is not tracking and not store any history of your search. 

Probably the best feature of DDG is the !Bang. It allows you to search directly the dozens of popular sites from DDG. Maybe you want to generate unique or random password? Yippy search engine. Formerly it was well known as Clusty-Vivisimo search engine. This SE was designed family friendly for all users who has more than eight years. It has become default primary search engine for students in US and Canada universities, for pupils in schools and also in public libraries.

Yippy offers to us menu bar: email, search, radio, games, Wikipedia, weather, chat, news, local news and events, videos and video conferencing, MapQuest and social networking...

Mahalo. It launched in 2007 as a powerful search engine, that provides more useable and applicable information to us, internet users. We can not only search for information, but also ask questions. There are two search boxes and depending on which you use, you get either direct hits of topic content or suggested answers to your question. Most Mahalo results have a higher relevance and content quality than offer other SE. Just use it and understand how it works.

Dogpile. This SE is a meta search engine. It accumulate results from Google and Yahoo, from MSN and Ask search engines, so it provides the best of the possible best. More results means  that you get better opportunity to find what you are searching for.
